Superboy: Man of Tomorrow #3 by Kenny Porter Review

*This article contains spoilers for Superboy: Man of Tomorrow #3 (2023)*

Superboy has found his place in the universe! Across the galaxy, Superboy is being loved and celebrated as one of The Cosmoteers! Pira and Rotu-Za, two of the cosmoteers, are in love with the charismatic boy of steel—but their leader still holds hostility toward the super powered punk. Though things are bound to change…

Superboy: The Man of Tomorrow #3 (2023)

Superboy is accused of not moving forward and not finding a new way, but rather chasing his glory days—the days when he was a hero saving people. Though what he is actually chasing is opportunity, the chance to shine without the burden of spotlight stealers like the super-clan. Though Superman and Supergirl and Jon Kent mean well, it is hard for Superboy to shine when his peers are burning so bright.

As two weeks go by, the heroes pass out honorary rings to the people they save.

Meanwhile in Dominator politics, Dominator X is put on trial for his work on cloning. His original purpose had, in fact, nothing to do with cloning and the manipulation of outside DNA, but rather to create more powerful Dominators. Obviously, the Dominator council agrees this perversion is a waste, and a reason for exile! And so, Dominator X is forsaken by his race. And in exile, Dominator X sets his sights on the future. A future with his clone called Infinity.

It is no secret that while most of The Cosmoteers embrace the chance to fight alongside Superboy, Travv is not as jovial about it. And Travv explains his reasons to Superboy. Travv is a Daximite. He should have all the powers Superboy has, but because he is a clone, he lacks all those powers. It’s why he kills his enemies—he’s not invincible and retaliation is real. He talks about wanting to change the legacy Dominator X left for him, and become a true hero. And Superboy believes him.

As Superboy leaves to answer a distress call, Travv speaks with the people he and Superboy saved—they mention the technology in the rings The Cosmoteers were handing out, calling it heinous technology. As they threaten to blow his cover, Travv kills them.

Superboy calls Kelex, asking for Green Lantern support (which means he’s out of sector 2814, which is supposed to be quarantined—at least according to the latest Green lantern comics). He knows something is wrong.

The issue concludes with Superboy returning to The Cosmoteers. He finds Pira and Rotu-Za have been taken out by an unseen force—presumably the clone called Infinity

This is another great issue, a concise story which gives us all the information we need, no more and no less. It reads well and feels like it belongs among the other great Con-El stories—if not one of the best in recent memory. Though most Dawn of DC titles are struggling around issue #3, this issue does not disappoint. As always, it has been a pleasure to read. I may try to find more work by Kenny Porter, clearly they know how to write a story!

Rating: 4/5 Stars. This comic is still a heavy hitter and a hidden gem. Even if you are not a fan of Superboy, this series will make you one. You will fall in love with the 90s Superboy and his search for something more. Highly recommend it.
